I wonder, do you ever read Jack Vance? There is a creature from his Dying Earth novels which no one seems to draw correctly. It's called a Pelgrane: a hybrid of demon, man and basilisk, a gargoyle creature with a head of black chitin two feet long part of which comprises a hatchet shaped beak with two upwardly rising fangs. It's face is wizened and semi human despite being black chitin. Elsewhere it is furred, save for the wings, which are leathern, very large and creak like rusty hinges in flight. The eyes are maybe in proportion like for an eagle but more forward looking...and always in motion, scanning for human prey while soaring high in the skies. It has a crest upon the head where sometimes an ornament might be sported (in one case, a blue, egg-shaped pendant on gold chain). There is no mention of any tail. They are the foremost of airborne predators. Farmers ward their wagons against pelgrane by affixing long spears at he corners.
